Marshall Sherfield Fellowships 2025: Applications Now Open

The Marshall Sherfield Fellowship was established in 1998 as a way to celebrate the fifty-year anniversary of the Marshall Plan. Its goal is to enhance scientific collaboration and mutual respect between the United States and the United Kingdom. This prestigious fellowship provides an opportunity for American engineers and scientists to interact with UK researchers at the forefront, creating long-term relationships between the two countries.

Fellowship Objective

The fellowship is intended to promote groundbreaking research and exchange of scientific ideas. The Marshall Sherfield Fellowship encourages collaboration in a variety of scientific fields by allowing American researchers to work at the UK’s top academic institutions.

Criteria for Eligibility

The following criteria must be met by applicants to be eligible for the Marshall Sherfield Fellowship:

  • US Citizenship Candidates must be US citizens and have a normal residence in the United States.
  • Doctorate requirement: By the time the fellowship begins, applicants should have a doctorate degree in a Science or Engineering discipline.

Important The fellowship is not intended to support additional degrees. The fellowship is only intended for research after a doctorate.

Fellowship Overview

The fellowship offers successful candidates the chance to spend up to two academic year in the UK conducting postdoctoral research. This immersive experience allows participants the opportunity to explore cutting edge developments in their fields while forming vital links with British academics and scientific communities.

Financial Support

The Marshall Sherfield Fellowship provides comprehensive financial support to fellows so that they can concentrate on their research and not worry about financial issues. The fellowship includes:

  1. Grant for Laboratory or Research Support: Financial assistance to cover laboratory fees and other expenses related to research.
  2. Airfare Approved round trip airfare between the USA & the UK.
  3. Personal maintenance allowance : An allowance to cover the living expenses of fellows during their fellowship.
  4. Research Related Travel Grant A travel grant to attend conferences or events related to the fellow’s work.

Note While the Fellowship’s emoluments may be exempt from UK Income Tax, they could still be subject to US Taxation.

Application Process

Follow these steps to submit your application.

  1. Read the Official Guidelines for 2025 Candidates before you apply.
  2. Fill out the Application Form.
  3. Submit the Letter of Recommendation (Form A).: The applicant must request at least four letters of recommendations, from their selected recommenders. Each recommender must email their letter directly to prog.admin@marshallscholarship.org by the November 1, 2024 deadline.

Selection and Review Process

The UK-based selection committee reviews all applications. The timeline includes the following:

  • Application Review : Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of academic excellence, creativeness, and their potential to contribute to US/UK scientific relations.
  • Interviews : Candidates who have been shortlisted for interview will be invited to December 2020.
  • Final Announcement : The successful candidates will be notified by December 2020. The final results of the selection process will then be announced in Washington DC.
