The 2025 DHS Fellows Program, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is accepting applications! This program is designed to strengthen the research and teaching abilities of university faculty in select countries by enabling them to analyze DHS Program data. It also aims to enhance their capacity to pass on this knowledge to their students and colleagues.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
Faculty members from universities in the following countries are invited to apply:
- Angola, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Jordan, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Tajikistan.
Program Goals:
- Train participants in analyzing and conducting research using DHS Program data.
- Strengthen participants’ ability to integrate DHS data into university teaching.
- Empower faculty to build data analysis capacity within their home institutions.
Program Structure:
The program consists of a hybrid learning model, including virtual sessions and two in-person workshops. Fellows must complete the DHS Dataset User Course online before the first workshop.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be full-time faculty members from eligible universities.
- Teams should consist of two faculty members from the same university in fields such as demography, public health, economics, or sociology.
- Both team members must have a background in data analysis and a commitment to capacity-building at their institutions.
- Previous participants in DHS data workshops are not eligible to apply.
Research Focus Areas:
Research proposals must use DHS Program data and focus on areas such as sexual and reproductive health, family planning, maternal and child health, early childhood development, child discipline, child labor, gender, or related health issues. Teams from Angola, Burkina Faso, and Cameroon are encouraged to focus on child discipline and early childhood development.
Program Timeline:
- November 5, 2024: Application Deadline
- Mid-December 2024: Notification of Selected Fellows
- February 1, 2025: Completion of DHS Dataset User Course
- February 26 – March 6, 2025: First In-Person Workshop
- March 31, 2025: Submission of Interim Draft
- April 21, 2025: First Report on Capacity-Strengthening Activities
- May 14 – May 20, 2025: Second In-Person Workshop
- June 6, 2025: Submission of Final Paper and Presentation
- September 9, 2025: Proof of Submission to Peer-Reviewed Journal
Responsibilities of Fellows:
- Produce a high-quality, publishable research manuscript.
- Conduct at least two capacity-strengthening activities at their home institutions.
- Submit papers to peer-reviewed journals and the DHS Program Working Paper series.
Awards and Support:
- Fellows will receive a $3,000 honorarium to cover research and travel expenses.
- The DHS Program will cover travel and accommodation for the in-person workshops.
Application Requirements:
To apply, teams must submit the following:
- Joint application form
- Research proposal (3-4 pages)
- Capacity-building activity plan (1-2 pages)
- CVs for each team member
- Proof of employment from their home institution
